ApresSCI raising money for The Spinal Foundation

The Foundation’s main aim is to improve the quality of life through research. Research will be concerned with practicalities of living with spinal cord injury, but also with a committment to pushing back the scientific frontiers of spinal cord injury. One of the initial priorities is to establish a research institute adjacent to the National Spinal Injuries centre.

Major on a Mission

He’s raised 96% of his target for “Phil’s Million” for Help for Heroes but still needs our support

philpacker1

Following a rocket attack in Basra, 16 months ago Major Phil Packer, a Royal Military Police officer was left with a severe spinal injury. He was expected never to walk again.

Phil refused to accept the limitation of his own disability and set out to raise £1million for the charity Help for Heroes, for “people less fortunate than myself”. The charity raises money to assist wounded British servicemen and women.

When he attended the IoD Buckinghamshire Branch’s Gala Dinner as our guest of honour in October last year, Major Packer explained his fund raising mission and the sporting activities he would be tackling.  At that time he had raised just £62,000.  Our members added £4,500 on that night.  At time of writing, he has now raised £953,578.

He’s 4% short of his target.

Major Packer recently rowed the Channel and completed the Flora London Marathon course on crutches in 13 days, at a rate of two miles a day. He has been invited to become a  Princes’ Trust Ambassador by HRH Prince Charles and has gained the support from leading public figures , celebrities, sportsmen and  ordinary people,  just touched by his courage., He continues to inspire  many military personnel, both able and disabled – they  call him “Boss”.

What next? Phil is going for gold with his next challenge to climb El Capitan Mountain in the USA – 4,254 pull ups, 3000ft, 3 days, 1 mountain – supported by Andy Kirkpatrick, Ian Parnell and Paul Tatersal (9-11 June 2009)

To quote Phil, “It’s all about what you can do, not what you can’t do”

Phil Packer hopes to raise £1m for the charity Help for Heroes.  Please donate by visiting www.philpacker.com. If you’re a celebrity, you might wish to provide Phil with a Message of Support.
