Of course, leadership is partly about someone being in charge. But we can’t lead very much on our own!
There will always be situations when we need one person to be in charge and to say “I know best. Please do as I say”. For instance, where there is no time to discuss the problem, where one person knows best, or where the solution is crystal clear. The emphasis is on making the safest, quickest decision and taking action as efficiently as possible. But, of course, many leadership issues aren’t as clear-cut as this.
Leading Together is about creating an environment where every person focuses on the purpose of the whole team, organisation or system, not just their own job or area. It encourages everyone to take action where and how they can to solve problems, to connect with others who can help and to focus on joint success.
Leading collectively opens up many possibilities for teams, organisations and partnerships. When the approach is embedded as ‘the way we lead around here’, people are more likely to:
- Trust each other, be kind to each other and take a fair share of accountability
- Openly clarify and discuss what they are trying to achieve and how
- Feel safe to question, challenge and consider alternative perspectives
- Try new ways of doing their work, learn from mistakes, strive to improve
Could this help with the leadership challenges you are facing?
